Food contamination is a serious issue, and quite often the news will report on these types of food that have been contaminated and in stores around the country. Contamination can often be extremely harmful and potentially deadly. Most of these contamination issues can be avoided, and occur during the packaging phase of the product.
Many packaged foods are sealed and packaged in controlled environments, typically referred to as clean rooms. These rooms are often used for the production of microchips and medical devices but have been quite beneficial in the food packaging industry. These industries all share the common goal of keeping their products contaminate free. These rooms use a variety of methods to keep contaminates and harmful substances at bay.

Clean rooms are ranked in various levels depending on the process and products that are being handled within the room. These rooms are classified by the amount of particulates in the air and those rooms with the lowest number of particulates have the cleanest environments. Rooms that package food don't typically require the same stringent level of cleanliness that is needed to package and create medical devices.
Food packaging varies greatly depending on which items are being packaged. One method that is quite common with the packaging of dairy and other food products is aseptic processing. This process achieves a safe sterile level through flash heating the product. Similar to flash freezing, this allows for a greater preservation of nutrients and less energy use than other sterilization methods. Aseptic processing allows the food or drinks to last quite a while without the addition of preservatives.
Other food items are easily packaged and simply require an environment that is easily regulated. These facilities share many of the same characteristics found in clean rooms such as smooth walls, HVAC systems, and the ability to facilitate large machinery. One of the biggest advantages of clean rooms specifically meant for food production is the ability to keep out contaminates and control the environment.
Because of the wide variance in clean rooms needed to accommodate various food packaging machinery, modular clean rooms are an excellent choice. Championed for their ease of construction and customization, modular clean rooms are a great solution that also offers tax deductions.
Food preservation has become a necessity, and making sure that foods are safe to eat is vital. Contamination can potentially be fatal and could ruin a brand. Safety measures and the proper use of packaging facilities are essential to the preservation of food.
